What we like

Big color with a small movement. Coloring the whole night sky behind Lunai becomes a few slow, satisfying strokes, which is often the part children remember enjoying.

They're built to last. The blocks are sturdy and wear down slowly, so one tin can see a child through years of pages.

Layering is easy. A light layer of yellow under blue gives a soft green; colors glow rather than sit flat.

Worth knowing before you buy

• This set has 8 colors. Stockmar also sells larger tins and a "Colours of the World" tin of skin tones.
• Store them in the tin: loose blocks are easy to lose under a sofa.
• Small details are possible with a block's corner, but most children switch to pencils for those.
